There are many rules that come into play when playing a sport competitively. Some rules can be played around with, but some cannot be broken and you will either be docked points or be completely disqualified.
Surya Bonaly was a fierce freestyle ice skating competitor. She was on fire every time she stood on that Olympics ice rink, fearlessly striving for her place on that podium.
In ice skating competitions, backflips were not allowed, at all. But when Surya Bonaly went for something unimaginable, braking the rules of competing at the 1998 ice skating Olympics stadiumm, she got a standing ovation.
She took a chance of her career and did a backflip while landing on one foot. She risked being disqualified and eliminated from the competition.
She had a burning desire to do something magical on that ice rink. She didn’t win that competition that night, but that one move launched her career to go professional. She changed the history of ice skating competitions to where she was now able to perform them at her pleasure.
